When searching for a domain name, you might come across a name containing a well-recognised brand. Or perhaps you're tempted to type 'google' into the search box and see what turns up.

So there they are: GoogleSearchWorld, GoogleAdvanceSearch, GoogleSearchMachine, GoogleSearchUk, WhackTheGoogle, etc, etc…

You then might wonder how you could use one of these domains to piggy-back on the back of such a well known brand.

SEOThe HTML sitemap is designed to help human visitors find what they are looking for.

The XML sitemap is a different beast designed to help search engines understand your site and therefore improve search engine optimisation (SEO). This is the main subject of this topic.

Creating many passwords that comply with strong password advice and that we can remember (not just the password, but which password belongs to which site) is impossible.

So what do we do? We write our passwords down. But how can we do this securely?

Affiliate marketing is big-business – sales are measured in billions each year. It involves a relationship between an affiliate (often referred to as a publisher) and a merchant (often referred to as an advertiser).

Affiliates are individuals (like you or me) who own a Website and would like to earn money from their site without going through the process of starting and running a retail business of their own.

Two attributes of any images included in your webpage can benefit your SEO and they are often overlooked. These are the image filename and the 'alt' text.

The filename and alt attribute should include the keywords you are targeting. As with your page descriptions and content elements, don't stuff them with keywords and make them 'spammy'.

From a human visitor viewpoint, links should be clearly identified. They should be displayed in a different colour from surrounding text and, unless in an obvious navigation component such as a menu, they should be underlined.

It has become quite common to remove underlining in link text, but doing so increases the risk that links will be missed or that they'll be clicked accidentally.

Search engines are particularly interested in headers or header tags (h1, h2, h3, etc), as they are assumed to say something about the way your content is organised on the page and the key points covered on the page.

Make sure the headers on your page form a logical structure and hierarchy; h1 being the most important and h6 the least important. The headers should be relevant and contain your targeted keywords.

Your priority should be to make navigation as easy as possible for your human visitors.

Global navigation should be consistent in placement, function, and style wherever your visitor is at your site. Modifying any of these attributes on different pages will only confuse and frustrate.

Clear and well organised navigation is essential if your visitors are to be able to quickly and easily find the content they want. It also helps the search engines to determine what you, as the site owner, think is important and what role a page plays in the overall scheme of things.

The first point to make about your webpage content is that it must be written first and foremost with human visitors in mind. Don't fall into the trap of focusing purely on the search engines only to find that your content is ugly and poorly written. Your visitors will not tolerate this and will leave, defeating the object of optimising your pages in the first place.

Your primary goal, and also that of the search engines, is to provide quality content that is interesting and informative for potential visitors.

The meta-description tag can be used by search engines to determine the content of your page and it is often shown in the search engine results pages (SERPS) beneath the link to your web page.

This element can be particularly important if your page has very little text, as might be the case with an image album, for example.

You should make your description compelling and accurate, and include your relevant keywords. A good appealing description can result in a higher click-through-rate to your page from the search results.

Is it essential to have a page title? No, it isn't. If it isn't found, the search engines will attempt to collect information from the page itself to create a useful title.

This is fine if the page has some written content, but not so productive with pages with little or no text, such as image galleries.

Also, without a title, you lose all control over what eventually appears in the search engine results pages (SERPS).
